Dr. Margaret Chen - Computational Intelligence Laboratory
Last updated: September 14, 1997

Welcome

I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Stanford University, where I direct the Computational Intelligence Laboratory.

My research focuses on machine learning, knowledge representation, and probabilistic reasoning in intelligent systems. I am particularly interested in how structured prior knowledge can improve the sample efficiency of learning algorithms — a question I believe will define the next decade of AI research.

Before joining Stanford in 1993, I completed my Ph.D. at MIT under the supervision of Prof. Patrick Winston, and held a postdoctoral position at CMU's School of Computer Science.

New: Our paper on Bayesian Structure Learning in Sparse Domains has been accepted to AAAI-98. Preprint available on the publications page.

"The question is not whether machines can think, but whether we can formalize what thinking means well enough to be surprised by the answer."
